Nai Harn & Rawai Travel Guide

This Nai Harn travel guide covers Phuket's quiet southern tip: a 700 m golden-sand bay that is calm for swimming from about November to April, Promthep Cape for sunset, and Rawai's harbour for longtail trips to the islands. It is written by Green Garden Villas, a private pool villa hotel 2.2 km (1.4 miles) from Nai Harn Beach, and sticks to facts you can plan with.

Nai Harn travel guide: why the far south

Nai Harn sits at the southern end of Phuket, where the island narrows into green hills and headlands. The beach is a relatively small bay of golden sand, low-rise and quiet compared with the west-coast resort towns. A Buddhist temple, Wat Nai Harn, stands between the beach and a freshwater lake, which is one reason the beachfront was never built up with large resorts.

Within a short drive you have Promthep Cape, Phuket's best-known sunset viewpoint, the Windmill Viewpoint, small coves like Ya Nui and Ao Sane, and Rawai, the working harbour where longtail boats leave for the islands.

How to use this guide

Start with where to stay in Phuket if you are still choosing an area, then read the best time to visit before you fix dates: sea conditions on this coast change completely between the dry season and the monsoon. The things to do page links every guide in one list, and the airport transfer guide covers the drive of around 60–75 minutes down from the north of the island. For days out, our island trips and getting around guides explain the longtail boats from Rawai, scooter rules and ride-hailing.

Local tips

  • From about May to October, red flags go up often on Nai Harn and other west-coast beaches. Swim only between the yellow-red flags.
  • Promthep Cape gets crowded at sunset. Arrive at least 30 minutes early, or watch from the Windmill Viewpoint instead.
  • Nai Harn has no regular public transport within the area. Most visitors use scooters, cars or Grab.
  • Cover shoulders and knees for Wat Nai Harn, Wat Chalong and the Big Buddha.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Nai Harn in Phuket?

Nai Harn is at the southern tip of Phuket, in the Rawai district. It is about 46–49 km by road from Phuket International Airport and about 17 km from Phuket Town.

Is Nai Harn worth visiting?

Yes, if you want a quieter base. Nai Harn Beach is low-rise and calm for swimming from about November to April, and Promthep Cape and the Windmill Viewpoint are both close by for sunset.

What is the best month to visit Nai Harn?

The dry season, about November to April, has the calmest sea. The peak, with the best weather and highest prices, runs from mid-December to February.

Can you swim at Nai Harn Beach all year?

Not safely every day. In the southwest monsoon, about May to October, waves and rip currents build and red flags are common, so always follow the flags and lifeguards.

How do you get around Nai Harn?

Most visitors rent a scooter or car or use Grab. Ride a motorbike only with a motorcycle licence and International Driving Permit, and always wear a helmet.
