Rawai, Phuket is the island's working harbour at its southern tip: a base for fishing boats, longtails and speedboats, famous for its seafood market and as the jumping-off point for islands such as Koh Bon, Coral Island and Racha. It is not a swimming beach, because the water is shallow and busy with boats; for swimming, Nai Harn and Ya Nui are each about 2 km away. Green Garden Villas is in central Nai Harn, within the Rawai district, about 10 minutes by road from the Rawai waterfront.

What is Rawai, Phuket like?
Rawai, Phuket is the island's working harbour at its southern tip. Instead of sunloungers and beach clubs, its shoreline is lined with fishing boats, colourful longtails and speedboats waiting to take visitors out to the islands. It feels lived-in rather than polished, which is exactly its appeal.
The area is spread out, and its draws are simple: fresh seafood, boats to the islands and plenty of Muay Thai gyms. Nai Harn itself lies within the Rawai district, so you will often see the two names used together.
One important point: Rawai Beach is not a swimming beach. The water is shallow and crowded with boats, and at low tide it exposes rocks and mudflats. For swimming, head to Nai Harn Beach or little Ya Nui, each about 2 km away.
Rawai Seafood Market: how it works
The Rawai Seafood Market is a roughly 100 m strip on Wiset Road, right beside Rawai Pier. It works in two steps:
- Buy your seafood, priced by weight, from one of the stalls.
- Carry it across the road to one of the restaurants, which will cook it to your choice for a fee.
The cooking fee is commonly about 100 THB per kg, though some places charge per dish, so agree the price before you hand anything over. The market runs from about 11:00 to 21:00. It is busiest around 19:00 and quietest in the late morning, which is a good time to browse without the crowds.
Longtail boats and island trips from Rawai
Rawai's waterfront is the place to hire a traditional longtail boat. Fares are negotiated directly with the boatmen, so agree on price, destination and return time before you set off, and ask for life vests.
| Island | Approx. time by longtail | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Koh Bon | About 15 minutes | A short snorkelling outing, popular with families |
| Coral Island (Koh Hae) | About 15–20 minutes | Beach and snorkelling day |
| Koh Kaeo ("Buddha Island") | About 30 minutes | Golden Buddha statues |
| Racha Island | About 30–45 minutes | A longer full-day trip |
Dive boats and most speedboat day tours leave from Chalong Pier instead, about 5 km away. Our guide to island trips from Rawai compares the options.
The Chao Lay (sea gypsy) village
Next to Rawai Pier lies the village of the Chao Lay, often called "sea gypsies". The community here are Urak Lawoi, among Phuket's oldest inhabitants, who speak a language closely related to Malay and have long lived on islands off Thailand's west coast.
Traditionally they hold the Loy Ruea boat-launching ceremony twice a year. The village is much smaller today because of development and land disputes. It is a residential community, not a show, so visit respectfully: keep your voice down, ask before photographing people and remember that people live here.
