Where to stay in Phuket depends on how you want your evenings to feel. Choose Nai Harn for a quiet, low-rise base with calm swimming from about November to April and sunsets at Promthep Cape; Rawai next door for the harbour, seafood and island boats; Kata or Karon for busier beach towns; and Patong, about 18–20 km north of Nai Harn, for nightlife.

Where to stay in Phuket: the short answer
Phuket is bigger than many visitors expect, and the area you choose shapes your whole trip. The airport is in the far north; the beaches most people come for line the west coast; and the island ends in the far south at Nai Harn, Rawai and Promthep Cape.
- Quiet, swimming and sunsets: Nai Harn
- Boats, islands and seafood: Rawai
- A classic beach town: Kata or Karon
- Nightlife above all: Patong
The five areas in this guide sit along the southern half of the west coast, so you can stay in one and visit the others.
Nai Harn, Rawai, Kata, Karon and Patong compared
| Area | Vibe | Beach | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nai Harn | Quiet and low-rise, with green hills, a temple and a lake behind the beach | About 700 m of golden sand; generally calm about Nov–Apr | Couples, families, longer stays, sunset lovers |
| Rawai | Working harbour with fishing boats, longtails and a seafood market | Not a swimming beach: shallow, busy with boats, rocky at low tide | Island hopping, seafood dinners, Muay Thai training |
| Kata | Beach town with restaurants, shops and hotels; busier than Nai Harn, calmer than Patong | About 1.5 km; good swimming in high season, surf in low season | First-timers who want plenty of choice on foot |
| Karon | Resort area between Kata and Patong | A long, open west-coast beach | Resort holidays with a big beach on the doorstep |
| Patong | Phuket's busiest resort town, known for nightlife and shopping | Busy, central west-coast beach | Nightlife, crowds and energy |
Nai Harn: the quiet southern bay
Nai Harn Beach is a relatively small bay, about 700 m long, with golden sand, clear water and green hills around it. Wat Nai Harn stands between the beach and a freshwater lake, one reason the beachfront was never built up with large resorts. From about November to April it is one of Phuket's best swimming beaches.
The beach, lake, temple and small village are all within about a 10-minute walk of each other, and Promthep Cape is about 3.5 km by road. The trade-off is distance: Phuket Town is about 17 km away and the airport about 46–49 km.
Rawai: harbour life, seafood and islands
Rawai is Phuket's working harbour at the southern tip, about 2–4 km from Nai Harn. It is not a swimming beach: the water is shallow and busy with boats, and low tide exposes rocks and mudflats. People stay here for other reasons.
- Rawai Seafood Market, where you buy at a stall and a restaurant cooks your choice for a fee
- Longtail boats to Koh Bon, Coral Island and Racha Island (see island trips from Rawai)
- Many Muay Thai gyms, from one-day lessons to months of training
For swimming, Rawai residents head to Nai Harn or Ya Nui, each about 2 km away.
Kata and Karon: the classic west-coast beach towns
Kata is about 10 km north of Nai Harn, roughly 20 minutes by road. Its beach is about 1.5 km long, and the town has plenty of restaurants, shops and hotels. It is busier than Nai Harn but calmer than Patong. Like Nai Harn, Kata is good for swimming in the high season, and surfing is better in the low season.
Karon lies between Kata and Patong, with a long, open beach. Both are on the Phuket Smart Bus route from the airport. From Karon Viewpoint, on the coast road between Nai Harn and Kata Noi, you can see Kata Noi, Kata and Karon in one sweep.
Patong: nightlife, if that is the point
Patong is Phuket's busiest resort town and the place people mean when they talk about its nightlife. It is also one of the main centres for Songkran, the Thai New Year water festival on 13–15 April, along with Kata and Karon.
From Nai Harn, Patong is about 18–20 km. A route planner gives around 22 minutes in free-flowing traffic, but along the Kata and Karon coast road and into Patong, we would realistically allow 30–45 minutes. Many guests who stay in the south treat it as an evening out rather than a base.
Season matters as much as area
All five areas face the Andaman Sea on the west coast, so they share the same seasons. From about November to April the sea is usually calm and clear. From about May to October the southwest monsoon brings strong waves and moving rip currents, even on clear days, and red flags are common. Lifeguards are typically on duty at the main beaches; swim only between the yellow-red flags. See the best time to visit Phuket for a month-by-month view.
Why we suggest a villa base in Nai Harn
If you want quiet evenings, a beach you can swim at in the dry season and sunsets on your doorstep, Nai Harn is the easiest choice in Phuket. Green Garden Villas has 16 villas in central Nai Harn, each with its own private pool and tropical garden, 2.2 km (1.4 miles) from the beach. Restaurants, massage studios, Muay Thai gyms, a 7-Eleven and local markets are within walking distance.
Couples usually choose the one-bedroom villa; families and groups the two-bedroom or three-bedroom villas with full kitchens. Compare them on our private pool villa page.
Local tips
- Nai Harn has no regular public transport within the area. Plan on a scooter, a car or Grab.
- Blue songthaew buses run between Phuket Town and Rawai and Nai Harn roughly every 30 minutes from about 06:00 to 18:00, with no evening service.
- The Phuket Smart Bus from the airport ends at Rawai Beach, not Nai Harn.
- Avoid driving in peak traffic, about 07:00–10:00 and 16:00–18:00, when cross-island journeys take much longer.
- Ride a scooter only with a motorcycle licence and International Driving Permit, and always wear a helmet.
